Get your home Christmas ready with functionality and decoration
We’re only 9 weeks away from Christmas for 2024 (I’m still in denial about that). For some, 9 weeks is plenty of time to get organised. For others, the stress is already starting to set in. If you’re hosting Christmas this year, below are some ways to make the most of your home this Christmas, and even if you’re not hosting this year, there are some ideas you can still implement which will make your home feeling more functional and cohesive.
Storage
From turntables on the dining table to baskets in the linen cupboard, storage is key in any home. If you’re hosting a party of 10 or more and are using long tables (like the good old’ trestle table), use a turntable or caddy to house condiments. This makes it much easier to pass the salt, then the pepper, then the tomato sauce for the 5th time. Bundle it all together in a caddy similar to the picture.
Another storage idea which is great for all year round is labelled baskets in the linen cupboard. If you have a special range just for Christmas and other events, or your table cloths and fitted sheets get mixed together, using chic baskets can be an aesthetically pleasing, yet functional way to keep your linen sorted. You can buy labels to place on the front so everything is clear and put away neatly.
De-Clutter
If you have excess stuff lying around your entryway, hallway or any other area where visitors are going to be present, clean it up. You’ll be surprised how much extra space you have once the random baskets, clothes and whatever else you have is put away properly. You could easily make room for a couple of extra chairs at the table by moving the table around a little or changing the orientation (if you physically have space for it that is). If you’re a ‘shoes off in the house’ person, put a shoe rack just outside the front door for your visitors, this saves them all taking their shoes off inside and potentially tripping over. Plus it just looks and feels nicer not to have 10 pairs of shoes in the entryway.
Decorate for Christmas without spending a fortune every year
A lot or people like to change their theme for Christmas decorating each year. If you’d like to change things up but not spend a fortune, invest in some timeless pieces that can be enjoyed year after year, then choose a couple of unique items that suit this years theme. Using a wreath on your front door? Invest in a quality, timeless one but add some ornaments or ribbons that reflect the style you’re going for this year. Next year, simply swap out those ornaments and ribbons with another style or colour.
Another idea is to keep the decorations minimal, yet effective. Unless you love maximalism, a few key Christmas decorations is all you need to bring the festivity into the home. Wrap a large garland around the staircase if you have one, add some battery operated fairy lights and, boom! Instant impact. (This garland here actually comes with fairy lights.)
P.s, if you choose a neutral garland, you can accessorise it with colour just like the wreath and change it up the following year.
